Black oxide, also known as blackening or gun bluing, is a conversion coating process that produces a black magnetite (Fe3O4) finish on ferrous metals. Unlike paint or plating, black oxide is a chemical conversion that becomes part of the metal surface, ensuring no dimensional changes to your components.

At DD Steel, our black oxide process provides an attractive matte black finish that enhances corrosion resistance when properly sealed with oil or wax. The coating also reduces light reflection, making it ideal for optical and precision instruments.
